Helpers Anonymous

HA! (Helpers Anonymous) – next circle starting November 8th 2023

Please note that applications have now closed!

What is this programme & who is it for?

If (like me) you have had a tendency to get invested in fixing and helping and sorting out others whilst (like me) you haven’t been taking best care of yourself, then this programme might be for you!

Join me, Joe, and 9 other ‘helpers’ in a 10 week sharing circle where together we’ll get curious about what lies underneath our helping tendency as we get better at being there for others whilst really taking care of ourselves! (basically a win-win situation!)

What will we learn?

The programme will be shaped as we go (as we listen to what the group needs) but will cover themes including:

Identifying & expressing our needs

Our boundaries

(Self) compassion fatigue

Listening to our bodies (think headaches, gut feelings, anxiety)

Our parts (e.g. ‘the part of me that wants to stay at work until 10pm’, ‘the part of me that just wants to crawl into bed’)

Our relationships with clients, friends, partners and families

Our childhoods (what happened that shouldn’t have, what didn’t happen that should have)

Recognising our coping strategies and adaptations

Trusting our own process – how our own unique way of doing things can actually work for us if we let it!

Through sharing our experiences and listening attentively to each other, we will each take from each session what is most useful to us on an individual level as we integrate the learning in our lives outside the circle.

When & where is it?

The programme runs on Zoom on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm UK time on the following dates:

November 8, 15, 22, 29

December 13, 20

January 10, 17, 24, 31

The programme is open to anyone, anywhere in the world!

Toronto/New York: 2-3:30pm

Vancouver: 11am-12:30pm

Commitment & money stuff

Once your place is confirmed, your commitment is to stay through the programme until the end (as we’re only a small group it makes a difference if you don’t come! Please make sure you can attend at least seven of the dates including the opening and closing sessions.)

I trust in course participants (and my coaching clients) to provide my income in exchange for what I offer🌱

To participate you agree to make three monthly payments to me through the gift economy on the following dates via bank transfer:

Nov 8th, Dec 13th, Jan 10th (+ Optional ‘tip’ – January 31st)

You choose the monthly amount to transfer based on your context and your desire to support my work – if you’re feeling affluent give £50 or more a month, if your budget is restricted give less.

If you feel you haven’t given ‘enough’ by the end of the programme you can give me a tip on January 31st!

Please note that this isn’t a “low cost” course!

Also note that I am unable to refund your payments to me if you need to leave the programme early (for any reason) so please give knowing this.

You can make payments in £, €, USD or CAD.

My commitment to you is that I will show up for you each week as my authentic self, doing my best to facilitate an open, curious and compassionate space.

During our time together, I will continue with my own practice of self-care which includes meeting with my own therapist, coaching supervisor and all the other bits and pieces I do to keep myself well to hold the space for you all.

Joe is a pleasure to work with

His passion for participation, people and fun always shines through whether he’s co-facilitating a community meet-up or sharing his ideas for developing co-production workshops.

Joe is an experienced facilitator, able to hold space and create a relaxed environment for everyone to enjoy themselves as well as step out of their comfort zone and grow.

About Joe

Joe is a coach who works therapeutically with his clients around the world using the Compassionate Inquiry (CI) approach developed by Gabor Maté. In addition to the year long CI training, Joe has also trained in Solutions Focused coaching with SolutionsAcademy and Relational Mindfulness with Maura Sills at the Karuna Institute on Dartmoor.

Before coaching, Joe worked as a teaching assistant and teacher in primary schools in Guatemala and the UK and in the homelessness sector as a frontline worker and link worker in Brighton (which is to say that he has a lot of experience being a ‘helper’!)

Joe has a lot of experience in numbing himself with bread, Pret a Manger, alcohol, pornography, compulsive spending (and generally not listening to his body!). He’s since learned how to be with himself a bit better and is passionate about supporting people to connect with themselves.

Joe’s influences include Gabor Maté, Thich Nhat Hanh, Brene Brown, Hayao Miyazaki, Kae Tempest – among others!

Joe is an excellent, thoughtful and diligent facilitator…

Joe is an excellent, thoughtful and diligent facilitator. I have worked with Joe on some very sensitive facilitation situations including facilitating mixed groups on the subject of deaths of people experiencing homelessness. So I’ve seen and experienced first hand that Joe is able to hold a safe space for the exploration of difficult emotions and support people to connect in a way which is productive and healing.

More widely I worked with Joe on a co-production strategy he was supporting organisations and individuals to develop in Brighton. Joe has a sound understanding of co-production theory but most importantly is able to put it into practice to the benefit of the systems he is working with at the time.

I would recommend Joe for projects and initiatives which require someone who can hold space, connect up the dots and help communities and individuals not only see their potential but also make it happen.
